The UAE applies a standard 5% VAT rate, with mandatory registration once taxable supplies pass AED 375,000 over any rolling 12 months (voluntary from AED 187,500). Corporate Tax is 0% on the first AED 375,000 of annual profit and 9% above that, and every business must register regardless of income level, including free zone companies.

    Why It Matters

Why VAT and Corporate Tax compliance needs a specialist

The FTA's EmaraTax portal, rolling 12-month thresholds and free zone-specific rules make it easy to miss a registration deadline or misclassify a supply. Getting it wrong carries fixed penalties starting at AED 10,000 - getting it right from day one keeps your books clean and your input VAT recoverable.

    Two Separate Taxes

VAT and Corporate Tax are not the same thing

Most UAE businesses need to register for both, on different timelines and with different rules.

    Value Added Tax (VAT)

A 5% consumption tax charged on most goods and services, collected from customers and remitted to the FTA. Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 in a rolling 12 months.

    Corporate Tax

A tax on business profit: 0% up to AED 375,000 and 9% above it. Registration is mandatory for every UAE business, including those with no taxable profit yet.

Frequently Asked, and Ready When You Are

VAT & Corporate Tax, answered, plus a direct line to our team

What is the VAT rate in the UAE?+
The standard VAT rate is 5%, applied to most goods and services. Some supplies are zero-rated (such as qualifying exports and certain healthcare and education services) and some are exempt (such as specific financial services and bare land), which affects how VAT is calculated but not the headline 5% rate itself.
When do I need to register for VAT?+
Registration is mandatory once your taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 over any rolling 12-month period, or if you expect to exceed that figure within the next 30 days. You have 30 days from crossing the threshold to register on the FTA's EmaraTax portal - missing that window carries a fixed penalty of AED 10,000. Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500, which lets you start reclaiming input VAT earlier.
What is the UAE Corporate Tax rate?+
Corporate Tax applies at 0% on the first AED 375,000 of taxable profit and 9% on profit above that threshold. All UAE businesses must register for Corporate Tax through EmaraTax, including Free Zone entities and businesses with zero or low taxable income - the AED 375,000 band is a tax rate threshold, not a registration exemption.
Do free zone companies have to register for VAT and Corporate Tax?+
Yes. Free zone companies follow the same AED 375,000 VAT threshold as mainland companies, and must register for Corporate Tax regardless of whether they qualify for the 0% Qualifying Free Zone Person regime. Being in a designated zone changes how VAT applies to certain goods movements, but it does not remove the registration obligation.
What happens if I register late or file incorrectly?+
Late VAT registration carries a fixed AED 10,000 penalty, on top of any VAT owed retroactively from the date registration should have occurred. Incorrect filings, late returns and unpaid VAT attract further penalties under FTA rules. Getting your registration timing and return filing right from the outset avoids this entirely.
Can you handle my ongoing VAT returns, not just registration?+
Yes. We handle initial registration, quarterly or monthly VAT return filing, Corporate Tax registration and return preparation, and ongoing advisory as your business grows or your activities change.
